How to Compress JPEG Images — Step by Step Guide

Compressing JPEG images is simple with our free online tool. Follow this step-by-step guide to reduce your image file sizes while maintaining excellent quality.

Step 1: Upload Your Images

Click the "Select Files" button or drag and drop your JPEG, PNG, WebP, or GIF images onto the upload area. You can select multiple files at once — there is no limit on the number of images you can compress. Each file can be up to 50MB in size.

Step 2: Adjust Quality Settings

Use the quality slider to control the compression level. The default value of 80 provides an excellent balance for most images. Lower values (50-70) create smaller files with some visible quality loss — good for thumbnails and web images. Higher values (90-100) preserve nearly all detail but result in larger files — ideal for print or archiving. For PNG images, use the Colors slider to reduce the color palette.

Step 3: Preview and Compare

After compression, compare the original and compressed file sizes. The tool shows the percentage saved for each image. You can visually inspect the result before downloading. If you are not satisfied, adjust the quality and compress again.

Step 4: Download Your Compressed Images

Click the "Download" button on each image to save individually, or use "Download All" to get a ZIP file with all compressed images. Your browser handles everything locally — no waiting for server uploads or downloads.

Pro Tips for Better JPEG Compression

  • Start with the highest quality original — compressing an already-compressed JPEG produces worse results.
  • For web use, a quality setting of 70-85 is usually optimal.
  • Remove unnecessary metadata — our tool does this automatically.
  • Consider converting photos to WebP format for even smaller file sizes with equivalent quality.
  • Batch process similar images at the same quality setting for consistent results.
